Vaccinations
There is no vaccination requirement for an entry from Germany. (Please check the regulations for your country, if you are not from Germany) However, according to the Robert Koch Institute, standard vaccinations should be up to date. Vaccinations against hepatitis A are recommended as travel vaccinations. In the case of a long-term stay or a particular risk, also against hepatitis B and typhus.

When entering from a yellow fever area, proof of a yellow fever vaccination must be provided. The Maldives themselves are not a yellow fever area.
Medical care
The medical care in the Maldives cannot be compared to Europe and especially to Germany. If you are sick, you should go to the clinic in the respective resort, or a pharmacy or hospital in the capital Malé or on the respective local island.
However, in the case of serious illnesses or accidents, a transfer to India or Sri Lanka is usually necessary.
There are also hyperbaric chambers at four resorts to treat decompression illness resulting from diving accidents.
Possible diseases in the Maldives

Zika-Virus
The Zika virus is primarily transmitted by diurnal Aedes mosquitoes. During pregnancy, an infection with Zika viruses can lead to birth defects in the child. In recent years, there have been isolated cases of infections among pregnant tourists.
Dengue Fever
Dengue viruses are also transmitted by diurnal Aedes mosquitoes. Infections occur, especially during the rainy season, and are usually accompanied by fever, skin rashes and body aches. There are no vaccinations or effective medications against the dengue viruses.
Chikungunya Fever
The chikungunya viruses are also transmitted by diurnal Aedes mosquitoes. Symptoms include high fever, joint and muscle pain. In rare cases, long-lasting rheumatism-like symptoms occur. There is neither a vaccination or chemoprophylaxis nor a specific therapy.

Mosquito repellent as prevention
It is recommended to protect yourself from mosquito bites with these measures:
- Body-covering, light-colored clothing
- Apply insect repellent several times a day
- Mosquito nets at night
Other diseases:
Diarrheal diseases
Diarrhea can occur in the Maldives. However, they can be largely avoided through appropriate food and drinking water hygiene. There are the following recommendations:
- Never drink tap water
- Also use drinking water to brush your teeth
- Keep flies away from the food
- Frequent hand washing
Geographically based diseases
Intense sunlight can cause sunburns. It is therefore important to pay attention to strong sun protection and sufficient fluid intake.
Swimming accidents caused by dangerous currents or creatures such as jellyfish or poisonous fish can also occur. It is therefore important to consider the respective circumstances.
