The Maldives is a Muslim country. Islam is the state religion and Sharia law applies. As a tourist you should respect Islamic tradition and behave appropriately. In resort islands which are specifically geared towards tourists, vacationers usually have little experience of the culture and customs – in contrast to local islands.
Clothing
On resort islands you can dress however you like. However, you should dress more appropriately in the capital Malé or on local islands. On local islands it is forbidden to walk around the island in swimwear only. However, on many local islands there is a designated area, a so-called bikini beach, where swimwear is permitted. The dress code has become more relaxed on most local islands in recent years. It is therefore not absolutely necessary for a woman to wear long dresses or cover her shoulders.
Religious characteristics/holidays
Another Islamic peculiarity is that Friday is considered a holy day or holiday. Prayer is called five times a day. The authorities and shops are closed on Fridays and ferries usually do not run.
Weekends in the Maldives are Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday to Thursday are considered working days.
Expect restrictions outside resorts during the fasting month of Ramadan. The authorities are reducing their working hours and restaurants are closed during the day.
As a tourist, you should respect Islamic tradition and avoid eating, drinking and smoking in public outside of resorts during the day during Ramadan. You should also avoid wearing short casual clothing.

Bans
Alcohol is banned throughout the country, with the exception of resort islands. Alcohol is not allowed to be consumed in the capital Malé and on local islands. However, there are so-called safari boats that are moored off some islands where the consumption of alcohol is legal. There is also a ban on pork.
This is also noticeable in the entry requirements. The import of alcohol is strictly prohibited. So it makes no sense to quickly buy a few more bottles in the duty free shop. Alcohol in luggage will be confiscated at the airport and can be collected at the end of the holiday for a penalty fee.
Furthermore, religion frowns upon pornography. It is not permitted to import pornographic material such as magazines, newspapers or films. Even scantily clad people in magazines can be confiscated and destroyed by customs.
In addition, pork products and publications against Islam are not allowed to be imported.
Homosexual activity can also be prosecuted.
